All your points resonate. There is certainly no single way to paint kitchens, with so many variables affecting choice of preparation, primers, finishes etc. You can also learn a lot about a kitchen painter (any contractor) from how they communicate with you from the first enquiry onwards. If it takes weeks to get a response before work is even confirmed, consider what might it be like once work is underway.
