My dining room has gone through a few changes over the time that we’ve lived here.  Wallpaper removal.  Painting (and repainting, after have a case of painter’s remorse).  I was going for a light, bright, neutral backdrop, after taking down some not-so-light-and-bright wallpaper.  Here’s where it started, wallpaper and the swaggy drapes in all of their glory, before we moved in back in 2010: I painted it once in Horizon Gray by Benjamin Moore.  And while it was a lovely color, it just wasn’t quite right: I was going for a light, bright, neutral backdrop, and Natural Choice by Sherwin Williams, was the color that ultimately won. And here is a more recent photo, from this past Christmas.  Yes, changing out the chandelier is still on my list… I know, I need a rug.  We’ve actually gone through a couple of them now – thanks to my brilliant idea of adding a puppy to the house…  So, we’re rug-free in here for the moment. The Christmas gallery wall came down, and I’ve been staring at blank walls, and not loving the color as much as I once did.  I’ve been loving rich, saturated colors lately (and I’m a sucker for […]

A Dining Room Do Over https://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-do-over/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dining-room-do-over https://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-do-over/#comments Mon, 25 Jun 2012 17:00:00 +0000 http://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-do-over/

Hello friends! I have been a busy bee here since I think I’m the only blogger who didn’t go to Haven.   I recently posted about my drapery panel dilemma, and after reading all of your feedback, I have made changes and I thank you for that!  Some of you mentioned that I should keep the blue in the banded draperies, and you were right. I decided the paint color (although I love it), was part of the issue.  I wanted to do the banded drapes, but wasn’t loving the look of the blue fabric against the Horizon Gray.   Who knew there were so many neutrals?   I went neutral, and opted for a color called Natural Choice (Sherwin Williams).  Ironic, since it took me so long to decide on a color – definitely not a “Natural Choice”. 😉  Does it say something about me when it takes longer to choose a color than it does to paint the actual room? I’m thinking this will be a better backdrop for the color I want in the drapery panels.   I swear, this is a different color than what was in there before.  It felt weird painting over the darker color […]

Hey Friends, I showed you my DIY Dining Room Artwork the other day, and told you that curtain panels were in the works.  So, I’m working on that right now, and started at one of my favorite places – Target.  And I’m not kidding when I say started.  Originally I picked up these three panels. With a goal of making paneled drapes like the ones found in my inspiration photo: Source: inspirationfordecoration.blogspot.com via Jenny on Pinterest But when I brought them home, I realized the brown drapery was too light and the blue wasn’t the right blue.  So, I took them back and opted for a darker brown panel, and kept it basic – dark brown and beige.   Boring or classic?   Did I mention when I returned the panels and bought different ones they were on sale for $12 each?  Nothing boring about that! So, here’s my current conundrum.  Before I tackle this sewing project (I break out into hives at the mere mention of the “s” word), what do you think?  Don’t worry, I have jury rigged some options for you to noodle on before making a decision. Option #1:  Brown panels with a cream center stripe […]

Dining Room Progress: Adding Artwork https://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-progress-adding-artwork/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dining-room-progress-adding-artwork https://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-progress-adding-artwork/#comments Tue, 05 Jun 2012 17:00:00 +0000 http://evolutionofstyleblog.com/dining-room-progress-adding-artwork/ Hello! Remember my inspiration photo for my dining room redo?  Let me refresh your memory, just in case you forgot… Source: inspirationfordecoration.blogspot.com via Jenny on Pinterest Ah, yes.  There it is. Well, another teensy step has been made in emulating this room into my own.  The artwork. I didn’t do shadow boxes like the inspiration photo, but was going more for the effect.  I started with some images that I’ve had, and have always thought it would be perfect somewhere in the home, but just didn’t know where.  Until now. Meet Cook’s Illustrated.  And no, it’s not sexy pictures of food as the name may imply.  But the recipes are awesome. The back pages of these magazines are just crying out to be framed. Aren’t they fun? So, I bought four frames (for now), and put these images to work.  (Sorry for some of the angles on these – it’s virtually impossible to get a straight shot without a glare.) I debated on whether or not to hang them in a line or in a square of four.  I opted for the line of four, but the jury is still out, and I may very well change them around (and maybe buy a couple […]

Hello Friends, I took off for President’s Day and enjoyed the day with my hubby and kids, since my husband has been out of town for the past week.  He’s helping me put up my thrifty chandy that I am putting in the kids’ Jack & Jill bathroom, and like everything, it always seems to take longer than it should. So, in the meantime, here are some pics of the dining room with the new rug.  It looks great, and now I’m on a mission to get some drapes up in there! To see the other posts about this dining room update, click here and here. And since this room is evolving, let me remind you that the next Room Evolution party is on Wednesday, February 29th!  Mark your calendars! So, I’ve been tagged by three different bloggers – Lisa from Shine Your Light, Cathy from Room Rx and Maury, from Life on Mars – in a fun little quiz in which I answer 11 questions and then tag 10 more bloggers with my own 11 questions.  So, since I want to participate in all of them (but don’t want to bore you with 33 questions & answers about me), I’m […]

Hello friends! The dining room is already shaping up, looking way better than it did when I started.  After getting all of the wallpaper down, I agonized over paint colors for awhile, and decided on Benjamin Moore’s Horizon Gray. I know this is different than the creamy white in my inspiration photo, but I really wanted to make sure that the woodwork in the room and the trim in the around the window didn’t get lost.    Source: inspirationfordecoration.blogspot.com via Jenny on Pinterest With this color, the room has a bright and fresh feeling, but still get the contrast that I’m looking for. I considered a few different colors in my process of elimination. The Horizon Gray looks kind of green in this photo, and in some lights, it does take on a smidge of a greenish undertone, depending upon the time of day.  But, it’s shaping up to be a versatile color and I like how it coordinates with the other colors in the house. There is still much to be done in this room, and I haven’t hung any of the pictures back up at this point, so bear with the sparseness for the moment. And just so you know, […]

Hey everyone! Thought I’d give you a peek at what I’ve been working on with some of my holiday vacation time.  I don’t get many days that aren’t consumed with work/kid activities/etc.., so having free time like this is a real luxury! I was debating between two projects:  1) painting the coffered ceiling: (Sorry for the wonky angle in this photo – I had to take this picture while laying on the floor.  Didn’t mean to make you dizzy.) or 2) stripping the dining room wallpaper: I’ll take Door #2, Bob.  Since I’m not sure how I’ll jury rig the ladders to paint the ceiling,  figured the dining room was my best bet.  I wasn’t looking forward to it, (especially after stripping the wallpaper in the powder room redo) but it had to be done.  Thankfully, it went much better than I anticipated!  I was able to get the wallpaper down in less than a day.   I had been thinking about painting it in this dreamy color – Aegean Teal.   I’ve had swatches of this paint color on my walls for months. I love this color.  It’s rich and yummy, very similar to the color in my kitchen. […]
