Friday 5+1 (5 Things I Like + 1 Thing I Don’t)

Happy Friday Friends!

I can’t even believe we’re at the end of July, and with the mild summer that we’ve had, I’m not quite ready to get into back-to-school mode just yet.  I always say, in a place like Ohio, where you have all four seasons (and some nasty winters recently), I need a hot summer to get ready for cooler weather.  Oh well.  Out of my hands.

Let’s get down to it with today’s Friday 5+1!

Pizza Pizzazz
The Pizza Pizzazz is a new one to me, but my aunts and uncles were raving about it, so I’m sharing it with you.  Perhaps I’ve just been living under a rock, and you all are thinking, “Of course I have a Pizza Pizzazz, where have you been all of these years?”  According to them, it works magic in reheating anything from pizza to french fries, and makes them crispy in the process.  One of my cousins apparently wore this thing out while in college.

Periscope
Have you hopped on the latest social media bandwagon that is Periscope?  I have dipped my toes, but am still a newbie.  The basic premise behind it is that you can live stream video to your Twitter or Periscope followers (Twitter owns Periscope).  Or, you can poke around and see who is Periscoping by browsing the world map in the app (and watch others who are live streaming).  I’m still a newbie, but wow, what an amazing concept – I can’t wait to see how it takes social media to yet another level.

Summer Reading
I have been listening to a lot of books via Audible recently, but for summer vacation, I did go semi-old school and downloaded a book to my Kindle.  I love it when I get into a book that I can’t put down, so here are a few that I’ve enjoyed recently, that you still might have time to squeeze in before the summer ends.

This is the one I’m reading right now, and am breezing through it via my Kindle.  (I am enjoying it, but don’t tell me what happens if you’ve read it already.)
On Grace by Susan Orman Schnall

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarity
Actually, I started with this book, and then proceeded to read/listen to all of Liane Moriarity’s books.  (They’re easy on the ears if you listen to the audiobook version – the narrator has an Australian accent.)  They’re all great books, and I enjoyed each and every one.

The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion
I read somewhere that if you like The Big Bang Theory, you’ll like these books.  Although I’m not an avid watcher of The Big Bang Theory, these books were hilarious.  Again, I highly enjoy the audiobook versions, as they are told with such wit and charm.

Fat Chance by Nick Spalding
I found this one laugh out loud funny while listening to it – again, the audiobook version is well read and easy to listen to while multi-tasking.  I actually listened to quite a bit of this book while working on the oak kitchen redo that I shared earlier this week.

These are just a few of my recent reads that I thought you might enjoy.  Do you have any summer reads you’d recommend?  I’m always on the hunt for new books!

Duck Donuts
We visited the Outer Banks in North Carolina for the first time this year, celebrating my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, and heard all sorts of talk about how wonderful Duck Donuts are (Duck is a town in the Outer Banks).  I’m not a big donut person typically, but oh. my. goodness.  These donuts are divine.  They’re made to order and served warm.  They practically melt in your mouth.  It’s a good thing I don’t live around here – they are highly addictive!

Celebrating 50 Years
As I said, we were in The Outer Banks Celebrating my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.  What an amazing feat.  My parents were high school sweethearts, and have been such great examples of what is important in a marriage that will last the test of time.

When I asked my parents and my aunt and uncle, who have both been married for 50 years (or longer), what the “secret” to 50 years of marriage, they said:

  • Compromise – lots of give and take.
  • Patience with one another.
  • Genuine caring and love for your spouse.  Having faith and trust in each other.
  • Knowing that marriage isn’t perfect, but it’s good and worth fighting for.
  • Being committed – there are going to be lots of ups and downs, but you can’t give up and walk away.  You work through things together.

As for my +1 Thing that I don’t like – this week, there isn’t much not to like.  Except that vacation is over and school routines will be back in full swing too soon!

Have a great weekend!
