Friday 5+1 (5 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t) – 9.20.19

Is it fall yet where you are?  Mother Nature seems to think it’s still summer, even though we’re more than halfway through the month of September.  This is where I wish we could just bottle up these warm days and bring them out in the middle of February to enjoy.  That said, we just got back from a glorious trip in Napa Valley, celebrating a friend’s 50th.  It was too amazing for words, and I look forward to sharing it with you.  How about a Friday 5+1 as we roll into the weekend?  This post contains some affiliate links.

Cool Wedge Sneakers

While on our Napa trip, my girlfriend had a pair of wedge sneakers on, that caught my eye on day one.  She’s a photographer, and wears them all the time, saying they’re super comfortable, even when she’s on her feet all day.  So, I came home and promptly bought myself a pair.  So cute!  FYI – The link isn’t the exact same one that I bought at DSW, but it’s about as close as you can get if you want to buy them online.

Recipe Cutting Board

If you’re looking to get a head start on Christmas shopping, here is a great sentimental gift.  I love anything that makes use of handwriting of a loved one.  I know I could pick out my mom’s or my grandmother’s handwriting out of a crowd in a heartbeat.  And let’s face it, handwriting is a lost art these days.  This recipe cutting board is so sweet and thoughtful don’t you think?

Rustic Wood Cheese Board

I think I must still have wine and cheese on my brain, because I couldn’t help but share this beautiful custom cheese board with you.  Great for the holidays (or for when you want to enjoy some good cheese on a pretty palette).  Is it wrong that I just spent an inordinate amount of money on cheese at the grocery store?  I feel like my wine and cheese game has gone up a couple of notches…

Vintage Map of Napa Valley

Yes, I’m a bit obsessed over here right now, I’ll admit it.  We spotted a really cool framed vintage map at one of the wineries we visited, and I found one that I think looks just like it.  I love stuff like this, and I think it would be a neat addition to a bar or entertaining area in a home.

Ladies in Black

If you’re looking for a fun movie to watch this weekend, give Ladies in Black on Netflix a try.  My husband and I watched it last night and we both enjoyed it.  It takes places in Sydney in the late 1950’s, and centers around the a young girl who works at the department store Goode’s.  It’s a story about her as she comes of age, and the lives of women who work with her.  I find stories that take place in this era so interesting and nostalgic.  Times seem so much simpler back then in many ways.

My +1 for the week – When my college son uses all of our data

So, while on vacation, we got an alert that we had hit 75% of our data usage (and the month had barely started).  At the time we were out and about, having fun, and I started freaking out about it because we upped our plan big time and we never run out of data.  At the moment, my husband told me not to worry about it – because we were out and having fun.  It could wait.  Then we get the message that we’ve used 100% of our data.  Say whaaaaat?  At this point, we’re about to head home, so my husband pulled up the data to find that my oldest son had consumed 75% of the family’s data.  He has been having issues with WiFi in his house (he’s on the third floor), and apparently my husband told him he could use his phone as a hotspot here and there if needed.  We’re thinking – assignments, websites, etc…  Little did we know that he used it to stream some football games.  I sure hope he’s learning something in college.  Perhaps I need to send him to a course on how streaming video uses up all of your data…

I feel your data pain! When I received the notification of 10% of your data left, I send a text to my entire family to shut the data down and make them all wait it out. Grrr. BTW, Ladies In Black is not on Netflix, I think it’s Amazon Prime..

My kids and I learned that data issue a long time ago. After being burned by my kids, I put limits on their data. When they’ve used it up, they’re done.

I had to laugh about the data because I have been experiencing this for years with my son in college and now I’m kind of expecting it to start with my daughter who is now a college freshman (both at UC too!). It seems like no matter how much we up it-it still gets devoured! I’m going to take the advice of other commentors and limit it. I have also been shut out of Netflix at times because both my children are watching at the same time (and I don’t want to pay more for 3 users).
