Friday 5+1 (5 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t) – 8.12.16

Happy Friday!

The kiddos started school yesterday, so the reality that summer is over is starting to set in, even though it’s still super hot and humid outside.  It’s going to be an adjustment, but suffice to say, everyone was in bed early last night.  But, it is what it is, right? Let’s kick off the school year with this week’s Friday 5+1!  This post contains some affiliate links.

Meme Hill

I had to share my friend Amie’s blog, Meme Hill, because 1) she was my Haven roomie, and is totally fun and sweet and 2) she’s crazy talented.  To put it in perspective, I’m a painter, Amie is an artist.  Here are a couple of my favorite projects –

The Homearama home that she designed (and you know how much I love Homearama).

memehill showhome

Gorgeous, yes?

This checkerboard floor that she painted is amazing.  The math alone has my head spinning.

Here it is in progress –

And here it is completed.  See what I mean?  Crazy skills.

That’s just a taste of her talent.  Take a look at her blog for more – there’s lots of it!

Flaming Pot

I spotted some projects from Flaming Pot on Facebook, and was smitten with the cuteness factor.  I mean, who doesn’t love a crocheted donut pillow?

Absolutely adorable.

My New Go Pro

I keep thinking/talking about adding some video tutorials on my blog, and finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a Go Pro to play around with it.  I opted for the mid-range Go Pro Hero+ with an LCD screen, and have been playing around with it a bit.  I’ll just have to keep it away from my kids!

I’m hoping to use it to put together some video on how to use a paint sprayer (for starters).  Any video requests?  Trust me when I tell you that I’m having a bit of anxiety about putting myself out there.  I’m enlisting my daughter’s help in some expert video editing, since she’s more up to speed on this sort of technology than I am. 😉

How to Style Your Brand

I’m looking to do a blog redesign in the fall, and a blogger at Haven told me about this book – How to Style Your Brand.  I have it on order, but from the looks of it, and what she told me about it, it helps you to define and hone in on your style when it comes to branding.  It’s what I need – I feel like I know what I want (in my head), but translating that into a blog design is a challenge.  I will keep you posted.  The front cover sure looks promising…

Train Cases

Perhaps I’m showing my age here, but I remember my mom having a train case when we traveled, and it was a great piece of luggage to have to house all of your toiletries, makeup, hair products, etc…  I think the train case needs to make a comeback.  After traveling on vacation and to Haven, I got to thinking about how useful a train case would be in lugging all of this stuff around the country.

My +1 for the week – Having Olympic results spoiled by news/social media/etc… before I even have the chance to watch them.  I have tried to shield myself from the results (specifically, gymnastics), and even turned off a news notification setting on my phone (which apparently didn’t work, because it popped up again).  Even on the news, they don’t even give a “spoiler alert” – they just cruise right on in with the results.  I like surprises.  I don’t want to know who wins before I watch a competition, I want to see how the competition unfolds.  Perhaps it’s a tall order in today’s world, but should it be?

I should add here, that I tried to see if there was a way I could watch the gymnastics competition “live” vs. during primetime.  I couldn’t – not on tv anyway.  I think I might have been able to watch it on my computer if I dug around and tried, but who wants to watch it on their computer or their phone?  Not me.

Vent over.

Have a great weekend!

Jenny

I get overwhelmed when I start thinking about all of the work I need to do to get my blog organized like I want it to be. But yes, you have to start somewhere!

I would love to see edited videos on painting cabinets in general and using a sprayer. I’m considering the one you suggest (I like the no diluting paint) but it makes me more nervous since I’ve never used a sprayer and it would be a $ investment.

Great! This is on my list of videos to make – my daughter/production assistant was just asking me what we were going to work on this weekend. 😉

I hear ya on the olympics broadcasts. You could issue a spoiler alert for goodness sakes. And, the fact that they aired the gymnastics finals, something just about every little girl in America wants to watch, so late was absurd. A lot of kiddos are back in school and can’t be up that late!!

AGREE! The timing of all of it is just way off. I was watching the men’s competition and it went even later. I don’t know who is planning the programming, but it’s no good!

Jenny, I totally agree about the news spouting the Olympic results! I watch ABC Nightly News and perhaps they wanted to spoil it for NBC!

I should also add that I would love to watch more of the Olympians compete. It seems like it’s the USA Show with a sprinkling of Chinese and Russian gymnasts thrown in here and there. I don’t remember it being like this years ago – not a fan of this format at all. But I really hate knowing who is going to win ahead of time! Glad I’m not alone!

I’m so excited to hear your taking the video plunge! I would love to see your entire process, from prep to finish. And “live” product reviews would be helpful. I’ve been sharing your posts with my husband who is a talented cabinet maker, and he’s enjoyed your finishing tips, which is his least favorite part of the project. I think we could both learn even more through a video! I’m sure the first few takes will feel awkward, but you’ve got this! Really rooting for the blog update, too. It may seem daunting now, but I’m sure it will be worth it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Kathy – I’m still having anxiety about it! I would love to be a bird on your husband’s shoulder watching him do his cabinet making work! Does he need an apprentice? 😉 Are you anywhere near the Dayton/Cincinnati area? I could use someone like him for some of the jobs that I’ve been working on lately!

Unfortunately we’re on the West Coast. Shame, I think he’d love to help you out. He has a real “helpers” heart. The ladies where he used to work called him “Mr. Wonderful” I agree! I’m always so impressed watching him remake a door or make a small cabinet to fit just so… Not many will take on those kinds of small jobs or charge a fortune if they do. Plus he’s a great teacher if the student is willing. Perfect, eh?

By the way, he’s looking forward to your videos, too.

It would have been too good to be true to have him nearby – there is definitely a need for his sort of skill and talent! I would love to be an apprentice to a craftsman like that! 🙂
