I have to say, while I love what a great rug adds to a room, I struggle with paying big $$ for some of the rugs I see out there. I don’t know why – it’s a personal problem I guess. Maybe it’s because I think of other things I could buy with that money – like furniture or a plane ticket to an island in the Carribbean.
That’s one of the things I’m going to have to deal with when we finally take the plunge and put in hardwood floors in our great room. It slays me that we’ll be paying big money to install the floors, and then even MORE money to add a rug. I know it’s worth the investment, but dang, it adds up quickly!
Maybe it’s because I’m drawn to crazy expensive beauties like these:
Oh, Amy Butler rugs, how I love you so…
So, let’s snap back to reality here. You can imagine my exhilariation at finding this lovely lady while browsing one of the Joss & Main sales that I stalk check daily.
Ok, so maybe I shouldn’t have put this photo so close to the Amy Butler gorgeousness. Pretend you never saw them. Or maybe I’m lucky enough to have readers who have short-term memory loss like I do.
What was I talking about? Oh yes, my new rug…
And the best part? This baby only cost a smidge over $100 (plus shipping). It just got a lot prettier, didn’t it? The size of the rug is about 7’6″ x 9’6″ – something like that – not a full 8’x10′ sized rug, but the largest they had for this particular style. I mapped it out in my dining room, and determined I could make it work.
I figured worst case, I could use it outside on the covered porch. Did I mention it’s an indoor/outdoor rug? Yes it is. But that’s ok – I’m digging it. It’s actually really soft (confirmed by my 13 year-old and our dog). Now I’m wishing I had bought more than one so I could have some of this fun pattern outside too.
I’ll share more photos soon. The rug was delivered late in the evening on Valentine’s Day, so I only have night shots right now. Patience my pets!
So, what do you think? What are your thoughts on rugs? Do you struggle with laying your cash on the table for them too? Do you have any go-to sources for rugs in your home? Can you get the look you want, for less? I’m all ears!

February 15, 2012 at 2:27 pmGorgeous! I can't believe that was only $100. I'm kind of addicted to Amy Butler too but that'll only happy in my wildest dreams.

February 15, 2012 at 2:54 pmI love indoor/outdoor rugs for the price and washability; but they always seem to curl up on the corners. Rugs are a puzzle w/me…I don't want a "quilt" look on our floors, so I try to find matching or at least a coordinating set, and this is always a 6 month+ project. (Grr…)

February 15, 2012 at 3:29 pmthe best rug I found was a Costco special. $299 for a huge, 12 X 10 (I think), wool traditional. We had been searching for months, and were prepared to spend a few thousand (as we thought we'd have to), but saw these and snapped it up. I've never seen them there since, and we still love our rug! Yours is going to look great in the dining room. I have an outdoor/indoor rug in my entry, and you'd never know it would be ok for outside-very soft.

February 15, 2012 at 3:43 pmOverstock has a great selection and size options. Best prices anywhere. Can't be delivery of $2.95 either. I was spooked to pull the trigger on our family room rug (10 x 14) so purchased a smaller one (which ended up in the foyer) to test color and quality. Could not be happier. Price paid was about 1/4 what I would have paid at local rug shop.

February 15, 2012 at 3:56 pmIt's perfect for your color scheme!! I can't believe you got it for a smidge over $100 – that's a steal for a rug that size. I have to start looking at my Joss & Main emails more carefully!
We had hardwoods in our last family room, which was enormous. There wasn't an area rug big enough so we had a piece of carpet bound….that might be an option for yours down the road.

February 16, 2012 at 12:52 amDo you use a pad under your rug? If so what kind?

February 16, 2012 at 3:12 pmIt's beautiful! What a great score! What I'm currently lovin' is buying carpet remnants and having them bound into rugs. SO cheap, and they have some really beautiful patterns out there! In fact, there is a photo of one on my blog today (great minds think about rugs on the same day, right?!) 🙂 Hope you had a Happy Valentine's Day!

February 17, 2012 at 12:50 pmI like your rug a lot! It's very happy and at a great price. I recently bought an 8X10 rug for my living room and it as torture. They really are so pricey. I ended up picking based on price and the fact that they sold a matching runner which I needed. I'm happy with it, but I would have liked more options in my price range. I don't know why they're SO expensive.

February 18, 2012 at 9:21 pmOur entire house is a combination of hardwood and laminate floors. I have bought 6 rugs over the past year! My go to places are Homegoods, although some are better than others and Garden Ridge, not sure if you have one where you live. Also try Lowe's, we got lucky and found an 8×10 Shaw rug for $119.

February 21, 2012 at 4:49 pmMay I ask what brand this rug is? I have been searching high and low for a splash of beauty like this. I can search places like rugsusa.com forEVER. Can't will myself to buy, though. I love this rug. Good job!

February 21, 2012 at 6:13 pmHey Jenny! I hope you don't mind but I tagged you in a little question and answer game. Please don't feel like you have to do it, but I thought it was kinda fun. 🙂

February 22, 2012 at 2:28 amYour rug looks gorgeous! I continuously struggle over whether or not to spend that much money on a rug too. I am yearning for a new hallway rug, but haven't broken down yet.
Like others have mentioned, Home Goods is always a good source. Sometimes they are even quite expensive there though. I love the rugs at Crate and Barrel, West Elm and Overstock.com too.

February 29, 2012 at 3:14 amI put hardwood floors in 4 months ago and STILL haven't gotten any rugs! I am just aghast at the prices! I really need three of them, but after spending thousands on new floors, I think I'll wait to find a bargain.
